Easy Ways to Meditation and Relaxation
April 18, 2008
Stress is one of the most horrible things that we can put our body through, and it can be hard to rid our bodies of stress. Between the ills of everyday life, work, family, and social obligations nobody can be blamed for feeling stress pulling at them every day, but it does not have to be that way. People all over the world have taught themselves meditation and relaxation techniques, but meditation has proven to be one of the most reliable methods of giving the body some relaxation.
However, there is a difference between meditation and relaxation. Relaxation emphasizes releasing stress and letting go, whereas meditation emphasizes focusing your mind and disciplining yourself to maintain an altered state of consciousness. Meditation is the best way that science has found so far to cleanse and clear the mind. It has been scientifically proven to reduce the levels of stress in the body and can also reduce blood pressure and help with insomnia.
There are various meditation and relaxation techniques, however the basics of meditation remain the same.
How to Meditate
Meditation is not a difficult thing to do. It is all a matter of getting it done, because thinking about it makes it seem more complicated than it is. First of all, you have to find a place that is suitable for meditation, like a quiet room or even a garden or spot in your yard.
Prepare it the way that you will find it the most comfortable. A bunch of pillows, a comfortable comforter, a few candles—these are the types of things that people use to prepare their areas for meditation. Anything that relaxes you is great for preparing your mediation spot.
After you have prepared your spot, have a seat there. Sit up straight with your back straight and your neck stiffened, preferably with your legs crossed. Breathe in deeply, feeling the oxygen travel up your body, through your stomach and abdomen into your throat area and out of your mouth or nose, taking it back in the same way. Regulating your breathing like this relieves stress all in its own.
When meditating, try to focus on one thing in particular. Many people like to focus on an object in nature, like a pretty flower they have or once saw, or a nice sunset. Thinking about this one object centers the mind and gives you consciousness over what other things enter the mind as well. If it is something stressful, focus back on the original object you focused on. This can give a person a great awareness of how they allow themselves to be stressed.
