Meditation Guide

Meditation is one of the easiest methods you can learn to refuel your body, mind and spirit. While many of us have heard of the benefits of meditation, few of us actually want to spend the time it takes to learn how to meditate. We often cling to stress, fear and anxiety because we think we need these things in order to function in this fast-paced world.
Many people who have learned how to meditate have actually become more productive, healthier and maintain a peaceful composure. These people have found you really don't need anxiety to be a productive member of society. If you want to learn how to reach your potential in a healthy and peaceful manner, meditation may be just what you're looking for.
Here are My 7 Steps to Learn How to Meditate:
1. Begin by finding a quiet place where you will not be disturbed.
2. Sit down with your back straight. It is recommended to put your body in a position were you will be able to “forget” about it for a while.
3. Close your eyes and lift your eyes to a 10-15’ angle. As if you are looking up through the bridge in your knows, between your eyebrows. It should feel comfortable. Do not strain your eyes. This is a biofeedback technique to begin to slow down your brainwave activity.
4. Breathe in deeply 3-5 times. Inhaling slowly through your nose, exhaling through your mouth. Your breath regulates your mind. As you slow down your breathing, you will also slow down your thinking.
5. Relax your entire body. Begin at the scalp and simply send a warm relaxing thought to each area of your body as you slowly move from head to feet. Take 5-10 minutes to thoroughly move through your body.
Pay particular attention to the follow areas. These are where most people hide their tension: Tongue, relax your tongue, if it is pressed against the roof of your mouth, let it go back into the center were it belongs.
Neck/Shoulders
Lower back Pelvic Girdle
Hands / Legs and Feet
6. You are now in altered state of mind. You should feel, euphoric, light or very heavy. Depending on your cadence. Let yourself either do one of three things.
1. Drift into silence or
2. Visualize what you want or
3. Pray: Ask for help, guidance, healing or direction from your Soul.
7. When you are ready. Take in a deep breath and as you exhale, mentally tell yourself, I am going to count from 1-5, at the count of 5 I will fully return from meditation, being relaxed, refreshed, energized and feeling great. Silently count up, open your eyes, stretch your body and give yourself a few minutes to acclomate to your surroundings.

Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness meditation is a type of meditation that has been significantly refined through the Buddhist tradition and is currently enjoying international popularity due to the increased interest in Buddhism worldwide.
Mindfulness is a mental state characterized by complete awareness of the present moment. Mindfulness meditation brings one’s attention to what is happening in the now - the existing moment. By doing this, practitioners come to see both internal and external phenomena as nothing but aspects of the mind.
For example, we all experience “chatter” in the mind. Indeed, it seems the mind is continuously chattering and making judgments on perceived phenomena. By noticing this activity of the mind, while it is happening, you can observe those thoughts without attachment and aversion to them, thus bringing about the state of non-judgment. Through non-judgment one is enable to release thoughts and recognize them for what they are – simply thoughts. This aids in bringing one to the state of “no mind”, sometimes called “big mind”.
If you’re lost by now, don’t worry. There are plenty of websites online whereby you can further your understanding of mindfulness meditation.
Mindfulness meditation does not have to be constrained to a formal meditation session but can be performed anywhere at any moment. One can even use external stimuli as a springing board to jump into the meditation, such as a red stop light.
Try this: the next time you are driving in your car and you come to a red traffic signal, let that red light be your starting point for a quick mindfulness meditation right there in your vehicle. Simply become aware of the present moment – as each moment comes to you. Drop the past, don’t think about the future. Just be in the now. That, my friends, is mindfulness meditation, pure and simple.

Meditation Techniques

What are proper techniques for meditation and how can it help with depression and anxiety?
You have a lot of different issues you are dealing with here. First off, the techniques for mediation differ from person to person. Some focus on one object, some focus on a place in their head. Usually, you have to be in a quiet room with NO distractions at all, assume a comfortable position (sitting up or lying down are most common) and concentrate on something that makes you calm. Get all thoughts and worries out of your head and "feel the moment" and enjoy it for what it is. The deeper you can get into the moment, the better you are doing it.
Now, just because you are doing a good job of mediating, you may or might not see yourself handling anxiety or depression better. In order to deal with those 2 things, you must understand why they exist in your life first. If you are nervous b/c you have a big test or surgery or are breaking up with a significant other, or anything else vitally important to you, the mediation might help for a few seconds, but, once you deal with reality, it will be back. The best ways to deal with anxiety and depression is to be honest with yourself. Many people suffer from both. It is common and do NOT think you are alone. You are not. But the secret is to realize that depression and anxiety are symptoms of the disease, not the disease themselves. In order to deal with them in some permanent way, you need to identify what it is that is causing this inside of you. And don't ever feel like you have a dumb reason for the reason to matter to you. If you are deathly afraid of butterflies (for example), then you need to deal with it. No fear or problem is dumb or stupid that you should ever feel embarassed about. That said, you need to take a look at yourself and ask if you are ok to deal with the issue or if you will need help with a therepist or even medication. Do NOT feel that you are being weak, you are not, in fact, you are stronger then you realize if you are adult and brave enough to step forward and admit you need help to be happy. Once you begin to deal with what it is that bothers you, the anxiety and depression will be under control over time with work and practice, and mediation will be able to help you retain a balance in your life so that you can enjoy life to its fullest. Good luck. Email me if you wish.
