What do you do to relieve stress in your own life?

Work, family, holidays- the stress can build up. What do you do to relieve stress in your own life?

Hi Miss M,
Relieving stress is not an as easy task as it seems. The reason is simple: it is intrinsic to the life we live because stress is caused by change and the only constant in this world is change.

So we are doomed to experience stress in our day to day life.

The key to manage it is to build effective stress management techniques in our life as a counter reaction to the stressors.

There are many sources in the net, which address only the effects of stress: headaches, backache, anger .... and recommend therapies easing them for a short period of time (massage, breathing exercise ...). But this is not the point because this is a reactive behavior: we have the bad effect stress has caused and then only we try to ease the pain.

The point is to act proactively: to deal with stress in the long run by addressing the true causes of it and avoiding the negative effects it creates.

Let's start from the point that stress is not really that bad. Certain doses of stress are even beneficial sometimes - during exams or at work for instance. We need it to mobilize and deliver the best we are able to.

So the question is not really how to get rid of stress completely but how to have the optimal stress levels in our lives. It is about effective stress management.

Effective stress management or the Science of Dealing with Change has one basic goal: to find out how to set up the basic activities we do in our day to day life in a way which guarantees minimal negative effects experienced as a result of stress.

Five simple steps guarantee us a good start towards a healthy life:
1 Mind your words
2 Keep smiling
3 Recognize your victories
4 Pay attention to what you eat
5 Move

If you stick to them there is a good chance that the events in your life will be only contributing to your ultimate success in the battle against stress.

stress management techniques

Most people complain about being stressed out. But in a hectic modern world of today, who wouldn't Stress is considered as any emotional, physical, or chemical factor that becomes the root of mental unrest, and may be an aspect in disease causation.

A lot of people associate "stress" with mental or psychological stress; however, physicians and scientists use the term "stress" to indicate any force that damages the balance and stability of the body's functions.

People have to understand though, that even if stress disrupts the function and balance of the body, not all stress is bad. A mild level of tension and stress may sometimes even be beneficial; as in the case of feeling slightly stressed with work projects, which can compel an individual to focus better, work energetically, and perform a good job.

The same goes with exercise it produces temporary stress on a few bodily functions, yet has indisputable benefits to health. It is only during overwhelming stress, or poorly managed stress, that the effects become negative. In these cases, a vital goal would be appropriate stress management techniques.

Generally, stress is connected to both internal and external factors. Internal for the way the body responds to and deals with external-inducing factors job, physical environment, relationships, home, and situations. Stress management therefore, can involve doing some changes in external factors that confront a person, or internal factors that strengthen the ability to deal with things that come their way. Here are some effective stress management techniques:

Exercise
This stress management technique promotes one's overall fitness, at the same time as helping manage tension and emotional stress it temporarily diverts one from a stressful situation, and being healthy and fit increases one's ability to handle stress.

Relaxation and Meditation
There are so many ways of relaxation and meditation; some can be learned in class, while others on one's own. This stress management technique helps improve one's mental and physical well-being and control stress.

Time Management
Having a good time schedule is an effective technique to take off critical stress especially with doing the tasks one needs to get done in a day. Making sure that one does away with over scheduling helps a lot in not being "stressed out" with unmet commitments.

Organizational skills
A well-organized physical surrounding eliminates being confronted with stressful situations of misplaced objects.

Support Systems
Developing and cultivating a strong social support network -such as friends, loved ones, neighbors, business associates, and even pets- is healthy for the mind and body.

Stress is a fact of life for a lot of people, it may come in different ways or forms, but the importance of not letting it get the better of you, can be a life saver. Effective stress management techniques will help one to efficiently cope with stress; remember that early management of stress, means eliminating the potentials of health problems.

An overburden of living with too much stress is on the increase. Stress management has always been important, however new technologies are on the increase that may not be understood yet by many HOWEVER need consideration.

What is meant by the impact excess stress causes? There are various things that a person might attempt in concious and subconscious ways to reverse the stress they are under. Some may potentially try to alleviate their problems through scores of means that are not helpful. They may reach for drugs, they could overeat, they could go on spending sprees, and take part in scores of other activities that would undermine their ability to be a good parent. These behaviours can prove potentially devastating to the health and welfare of the child and the entire family. A parent cannot be effective if he/she is not in the proper frame of mind needed to be a good guardian.

So, what can a single parent do as a means of engaging in effective stress management? However, the response that you have to the situation need not be one where you are not in control of your life. Upon taking part in a proper exercise regime, a great deal of pent up anxiety can literally be burned up. This form of stress management also has scores of obvious health benefits as well which adds to its benefits.

Deep breathing exercises are a good "on the spot" form of stress management. When you feel overwhelmed in a stressful environment, counting down from ten and taking deep breaths can deliver excellent stress management results. Simple concepts like this should not be underestimated, any amount of stress that can be removed from your life no matter how large or small is a great great thing.

Stress Management Resources

Effective stress management and relaxation?

Stress has been defined by some as an "imbalance between demands and resources" or when "pressure exceeds one's perceived ability to cope"

My question is, what specific steps to do you use, or have you found effective when dealing with stress?

Do only what you rate. Otherwise no promise can be made, and none will be kept. Choose an action as much as possible insofar as stress is a matter of choice -- some is not. Some comes from out of the momentum of the universes, for truly, stress can be rightly defined as momentum, for the natural world has its speed and will have its way. Cross it and see what happens. Here's why one does only what one rates. For if one cannot, he or she but violates self above all -- which is the true underpinning -- and in turn violates all nature and all others, in which case all is thrown out of kilter, the least of which indications are compromised adrenal glands in the ones who dare cross each, their native force; and the worst, the downfall of whole civilizations.

The world's way, today, that which is now become the seed and fruit of stress, about which we grouse daily and as canvassed in news reports, and studied and observed in scholarly journals, is but an effect of an effect of an effect. That is not true stress but instead earmarks of tyranny.

Such has become or thought to be normal and good cause. What follows are series of deciduous remedies, a host of process analyses to repair but which action does little, for the more one acts, the more one has to act.

Stress as popularly defined and described is in effect examplary of a mistaken circumstance and event. One need only say the word 'stress' and quickly a darkness shrouds the faces of those who hear it as something to avoid at all costs and which must be monitored with affecting scrutiny, the least we might say is, a few formerly without employs now have them, a few new doctors from the schools with bon mots of advice -- in any case, which cause in turn resolves to more stress: let us not misconstrue here, this to mean achievement measured as some surplus or deficit, for which one must live the idea of a 'win-win,' which again is wholly mistaken, got up by marketeers in board rooms and shared amid text messaging, which evidences little if any grasp of consequence.

Stress returned to its natural charter, however, is but the opposite of healthy, rhythmical repose, whereas endemic to that of the world planes shares little and imports little but a way of doing all out of proportion to what the natural world affects to offer any longer and does not endeavor to tolerate.
