Have I got this right about hypnosis?

Is hypnosis simply putting someone into trance using an induction, and then telling what to feel or do?

What you are probably refering to is what's known as stage hypnosis, which is portrayed for entertainment purposes in theatres and clubs. While some experts believe an alternate state-of-mind is set for the participants, others believe rather commonplace social factors such as peer pressure and disorientation add up to this "hypnosis". This kind of hypnosis is meant for entertainment rather than a demonstration on how to get someone to do what you want them to do. Often, these kinds of performances are used to show the audience the benefits of mind powers, rather than trying to intimidate them.
Hypnosis is used by some licensed psychologists, which is used for many things. It may be used for helping relieve depression, anxiety, and other psychological issues. Hypnosis used for therapeutic purposes of the sort is known as hypnotherapy.
Self-hypnosis, known as autohypnosis, can be used to help build self-esteem, rid oneself of stage freight, and relieve one of bad habits.
