What are proper techniques for meditation and how can it help with depression and anxiety?
You have a lot of different issues you are dealing with here. First off, the techniques for mediation differ from person to person. Some focus on one object, some focus on a place in their head. Usually, you have to be in a quiet room with NO distractions at all, assume a comfortable position (sitting up or lying down are most common) and concentrate on something that makes you calm. Get all thoughts and worries out of your head and "feel the moment" and enjoy it for what it is. The deeper you can get into the moment, the better you are doing it.
Now, just because you are doing a good job of mediating, you may or might not see yourself handling anxiety or depression better. In order to deal with those 2 things, you must understand why they exist in your life first. If you are nervous b/c you have a big test or surgery or are breaking up with a significant other, or anything else vitally important to you, the mediation might help for a few seconds, but, once you deal with reality, it will be back. The best ways to deal with anxiety and depression is to be honest with yourself. Many people suffer from both. It is common and do NOT think you are alone. You are not. But the secret is to realize that depression and anxiety are symptoms of the disease, not the disease themselves. In order to deal with them in some permanent way, you need to identify what it is that is causing this inside of you. And don't ever feel like you have a dumb reason for the reason to matter to you. If you are deathly afraid of butterflies (for example), then you need to deal with it. No fear or problem is dumb or stupid that you should ever feel embarassed about. That said, you need to take a look at yourself and ask if you are ok to deal with the issue or if you will need help with a therepist or even medication. Do NOT feel that you are being weak, you are not, in fact, you are stronger then you realize if you are adult and brave enough to step forward and admit you need help to be happy. Once you begin to deal with what it is that bothers you, the anxiety and depression will be under control over time with work and practice, and mediation will be able to help you retain a balance in your life so that you can enjoy life to its fullest. Shaktipat or Shaktinipata is a Sanskrit word that refers to the act of a guru or spiritual teacher conferring a form of spiritual "power" or awakening on a disciple/student. "Shakti" translates as energy and "pat" as touch. Shaktipat can be carried out by the spiritually enlightened master either by transmission of sacred word or mantra, a look, a thought or by touch. Meditation Method

One of the most important things that you must consider when looking into a meditative practice is to figure out what it is you are looking for in that meditative practice.
Meditation in itself is a way for you to find a structured practice that will allow you to find a peace within yourself.
There are many types of meditation. The most common type is where you are focusing on a person, place, thing or object. Other methods would be where you are blanking the mind.
Some meditation methods such as Transcendental Meditation or TM teach some very good meditation methods and practices, but it sometimes gets lost in the ritualistic, quasi religious fervor that method brings.
Kundalini Meditation methods can also be very powerful, but again, sometimes the focus is placed too much on the spiritual end and not enough on the actual exercises.
What you really want to experience in a meditative practice is to create meditations that will allow the practitioner to be able to maximize their overall potential in all areas of their life.
The real key to any type of meditation is to get the body and mind to relax. The more you get your body and mind to relax the more you will get out of the meditation. Here are some simple steps.
1. Sit in chair in a relaxed fashion with good posture with your hands on your lap.
2. Close your eyes to focus on a specific topic, or keep your eyes open to focus on an object in front of you.
3. Spend 5 minutes just breathing in from your belly and out through your mouth.
4. Try and remove all thoughts from your mind- Just be in the moment.
You can continue this for as long as you desire. My suggestion is start out with 5 minutes per day and work up to 20-30 minutes per day. This might be referred to as a "Mindful Meditation".
Meditation is giving the mind an intent of something to do. You can meditate while you are jogging, riding a bike or even while you are driving your car. Many people find different ways to meditate so don't think that there is just one way to do it.
There are many different types of meditation such as lying down, sitting, standing and focus types of meditation, combined with important breathing exercises, postures and flow patterns that allow the body to get the maximum out of the practice.
One thing to keep in mind as you begin the meditation process, is to be consistent and to meditate on a daily basis. To get the clarity of thought you are seeking, meditation is an every day or several times a day practice.
