Using Essential Oils

April 23, 2008

A Guide for Using Essential Oils Safely

Make sure you use only those essential oils that are pure and extracted from plants.

Try to avoid using undiluted oils because they can be too harsh and have some poor side effects such as rashes, burning and itching. They can even cause photosensitivity.

There are times you can use these oils but you should still be careful. Sometimes it can be safe to use them on sunburns, pimples, insect bites, and other skin problems. If you have sensitive skin you should try to avoid undiluted essential oils all together. If you are going to use an undiluted oil try to naturally massage the oil into the bottoms of your feet so that the oil still gets into your body, but doesn’t irritate your skin.

Always test any essential oil you are going to use on a part of your skin before massaging it in on a larger area. It’s better to find out if you are going to have an allergic reaction by testing the oil on a small patch on your arm. Once you know it is safe for you to use (give it twelve hours for any allergic reaction to show up) you can massage the oil into your skin where you want to.

Always keep your essences and essential oils out of the reach of small children.

Benefits of Using Particular Essential Oils

Essential oils are a great part of aromatherapy. When we smell the aroma of certain oils our brain can tie the odor to something calming or stress relieving. This can help us in every day life.

Here are some uses of oils:

To Calm: Lavender, chamomile or geranium

To Uplift: Ylang Ylang, rose, clary sage, neroli

To Energize and Cleanse: Rosemary

For Help With Congestion: tea tree, pine or eucalyptus

There are so many benefits and advantages to using essential oils, especially in massage with aromatherapy. However, they can also be used to help burns, insect bites, pimples, and more. They can soothe headaches, help with symptoms of menstruation, and calm you after a long, hard day.

Studies have shown that those with lymphedema (fluid build-up in the soft tissue, usually the arms and legs) who used essential oils and self-massage helped to improve their symptoms. It can also help with headaches, back pain, depression, digestive disorders, stress, and even insomnia.

Essential oils come in a variety of products and uses. You see them in face skin treatments, holistic pet health, in candles and there are even homemade cleaning recipes with essential oils.
